MEMPHIS - Is it better as a tourist or a local?

Tuesday, August 8, 2017

Although I only lived in Memphis for a relatively short period of time, I like to consider it my homeland. Growing up, I always heard that home is where the heart is, and I'll tell you... there's nothing like the feeling I get pulling into that city. I love the way it smells. I love the way the weather feels at any time of the year - even the skin-melting heat of the summer. Even with no plans and nothing to do other than sit on a friend's porch discussing the most random of topics, I'd rather be in Memphis than any other city. Call me crazy, but I can't get enough of it.

Since living there, I've heard the arguments over and over of Downtown Memphis vs. Midtown Memphis. I have always sided with the Midtown crowd. In my opinion, there is no place in the world as eclectic and truly welcoming as Midtown. There is something and somewhere for every person, every walk of life. Midtown is Memphis, and we like for people to understand that.

What I've never stopped to consider, though, is how the tourists feel about this never-ending battle. As a first-timer in Memphis, of course you're excited about Beale Street and Graceland. That's what Memphis is to you. So, with that in mind, I've decided to try and answer the question - Is Memphis better as a tourist or as a local? I'm going to put that to the test. I will do everything in my power to remain unbiased, and here's how I plan to do so:

I am going to spend two full days/nights experiencing both sides of Memphis for all they have to offer. I will have downtown friends show me all the glories of downtown, and I will have midtown friends show me all the great ways midtown has changed. After experiencing both sides, I will write a review and tell you all about my experience.

If you have suggestions on where to visit, what to do, what to eat, etc. - please leave them in the comments below. We'd love to hear from you!
